I wonder how much the fall of communism has to do with this? random thoughts Send a noteboard - 24/10/2017 10:20:16 PM

When I went joined the Marines in 1985 we were being trained to fight communist. We had been taught our whole lives that communism was evil and one of the greatest evils was the loss of personal liberties. It isn't surprising that the generation not raised without the threat of losing those liberties is less protective of them. The rise of socialism also plays a factor. While socialism does not squash personal liberties in the way communism did it does place a lower value on them. If you are responsible for supporting someone else you naturally feel like you have more say in how they live their life. If I am going to pay for your health care you need to stop smoking or stop being fat ect. That and the belief that social engineering is a responsibility of the government leads to placing a higher value on political correctness and conformity than it does on personal freedom.

It doesn't Millenials are so inward focused they seem incapable of understanding the special rights to one group almost by definition limits the rights of another group.
