The North east and mid west are the areas that need the most money for infrastructure but try selling that to people driving on the crappy Alabama highways and unlike the north and the mid west Alabama doesn't really have the money to it themselves. Everyone agrees we need to spend more money but no one agrees where and giving out as block grants to the state takes to much control away from Washington and they hate to give up control once they have it.
While it seems simple people forget that the US is really a federation of 50 sovereign states. Which would be worse, asking Germany to pay for new roads in Croatia or Croatia to pay for new roads in Germany? It would depend on who you asked and the most likely answer is neither side will agree so it won't get done.
I mean, our state highway through my town just got repaved last year, and had a new bridge built for 4-laning the road a few years ago, though hilariously the brand new bridge is just sitting there unused, since the funds to make it a 4 lane ended up being used for something else entirely.
As for our main interstates, I-65 and I-20/59, they're both really well maintained, with the exception of 20/59 through Birmingham, but they finally got a large chunk of funding for it recently and have now started the process of demolishing the bridges and re-doing the whole thing, which, in Alabama, means it's going to be 4 years of nightmarish traffic, since our only interstate loop around Birmingham is only half done...
Regardless of my traffic complaints, the roads are well-maintained, with nary a pot-hole or rough patch from Mobile to Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa to Talladega. The real problem is once you get off the main roads, but the Federal Gov't isn't responsible for those anyways, so blame corrupt Alabama politicians for that.
