Keep in mind I don't support the socialist agenda and I am a veteran with a son who served in Iraq, I a father who served in Vietnam and two grandfathers who fought in WWII so I am pro military but we are simply spending to much money. As an a old school conservative I believe in fiscal responsibility and controlling the deficit. We could cut our military spending in half and we still spend twice as much as any other nation.
That excessive debt funded spending is not needed to keep either us or our allies safe and the amount we spend supporting all those excess veterans cost a fortune and it isn't just the ones with service related injuries. You are right that we can't just turn it off all at once but we can start the process of converting those resources over to more productive endeavors and maybe even something a little more inclusive than military service. Don't just hand it out as benefits but maybe subsidize things like clean energy or if you really want to make steel in the US go ahead and subsidize like everyone lese does. I loved the Corps and my career is a direct result of the skills I learned there but it isn't for everyone and we only need so many people in Chair Force. We need to create the kind of learning growth opportunities I enjoyed for people who don't want to sleep in a mud hole and who aren't willing to risk taking a bullet for their job.
I don't have the solution for the medical spending nightmare we have created but I am sure just expanding medicare isn't the answer and continuing the direction we are going is even worse. I am in the top 25% of wage earners in the country and I struggle with medical expense. We are a small and basically healthy family with no major medical issues and it still it is one the larger expenses for our household. My daughter recently had to have an MRI because she had been getting headaches. The Dr wanted to do one just be sure. That was a $1500 warm fuzzy but what can you do? cross your fingers and go with odds that your daughter doesn't have a brain tumor?
The Republican party is on the wrong side of some major issues that is going to cost them. I live in the Collin County Texas which used to be as solid red as you can get but Pete Sessions, who used to run unopposed, is now scored a toss up. We are losing a lot of people who should be republicans over these bread and butter issues that are affecting people's everyday life a lot more than the right to play with deadly toys. Especially thee moms who have to take those kids to the Dr and make those hard decisions are who are buying their kindergartener a bullet proof backpack because they are scared to send them to school. The only thing keeping the democrats from taking complete control is they have their own set of extremist driving them in the weed filled land up the fanatic.
