There are any number of steps governments can take to mitigate the negative effects of a lockdown, no matter how strict.

In the US, we had a lax lockdown without most of those steps being taken. We got the worst of both having a lockdown, and not enough people following it, leading to more spread, and no aid and help to mitigate the negatives.

Imagine where the lockdown was as strict or stricter in the beginning, but no one made mask wearing a partisan issue, and we had Federal resources dedicated to increasing mask production very early, and to also have a massive contact tracing operation.

That's what several East Asian nations did, to very great success.

You have to factor in the mindset of the average citizen of that country, and the culture that surrounds them. Asian countries are largely homogenous, have more sensitive populations in terms of geography and total population, and have in some countries, already had social mores in place like mask-wearing when sick that adapted well during this transmission.

The United States is one of the most diverse lands both geographically and culturally. It’s history is rooted in ideas of rebelling against authority, doing your own thing, living your own way. It should have been assumed that there would be resistance here. Each nation reacted differently, and the numbers reflect that.

I mean, look what happened to the Aiel, once they adopted mandatory mask policies....
