I blame starting a new job combined with having a 2 year old who goes to bed way too late for her parents' well-being. When I realised it was you, I thought "shit, that was the wrong person to school on German history".
I am using Führer as the word 'leader'. With all its negative connotations. I know exactly when Hitler came to power. And technically he came to power while the Weimar Republic still lived in early 1933. Sadly for the Weimar Republic. Le sigh.
The point is that Trump is a personality cult and the United States is in a Weimar period where left and right are battling it out for control over the state.
We can also discuss Führerprinzip. Or other personality cults throughout history. But the parallels to Weimar and the American Republic in 2022 are better than other parallels.
From my understanding (mostly based on what I picked up back in high school), the Weimar republic was an actual working democracy (while it lasted), and that the personality cult hadn't really emerged yet until after 1933. But I realise that might be a very naïve view.
