It's an interesting theory in either direction darius_sedai Send a noteboard - 25/07/2010 04:54:31 PM

The more I think about it the less I believe it is possible for the TP to be accessed through the link without the DO allowing it. Sure the link may have enabled the situation, but the DO could have shut Rand down pretty easily if he'd wanted too. The TP is essence of the DO so I have a hard time believing Rand could have used it without him immediately knowing what was up.

BS:

Matt: There was some confusion about Rand and the Dark One’s permission, so for clarification’s sake, did Rand have the Dark One’s permission to use the True Power?
Brandon: I have not answered that. If anyone says that I have, I have not. What I have said specifically is, this is recording: generally one must have the Dark One’s permission to use the True Power. Semirhage believed that the Dark One had betrayed her by letting Rand use it. It is good that you have asked this so I can make sure on the record that is the answer I have given.

This quote from BS makes it pretty clear that while "generally" what you say is true, there are apparently some rare/obscure exceptions where TP can be used even without permission from the DO. I think the idea with the theory that Rand used TP without permission is that his link with Moridin allowed him to "steal" TP from the DO using Moridin as a TP-angreal, and this is what BS had in mind when he answered this question.

Basically, from the POV of the Dark One, it was Moridin who channeled TP so the DO did not realise what was happening until it was too late. If true this would ofcourse mean that by cutting Moridin off from TP would also cut off Rand so its not really a true way of using TP withour permission, it just means that so long as one of the two (Rand or Moridin) has permission, then that permission is automatically given to the other too whether the DO likes it or not.

So the DO could prevent Rand from using TP, but if he did he would basically lose Moridin, since as addicted to TP as Moridin is, cutting him off would most likely end up killing him sooner or later.

Personally I think the DO simply took advantage of the situation and sacrificed Semirhage when he realized he had an opportunity to get Rand addicted to the TP. As the quote in the original post points out the goal was to capture and TURN your opponents piece, sacrificing your own pieces in order to achieve it.

Yep. This is the other theory. I think at this point both theories could be true. I am looking forward to finding out which one actually is.

IMO it's obvious that the DO could have prevented Rand from using the TP to escape Semirhage by the simple expedient of cutting Moridin off. Nothing to say he wouldn't later restore Moridin's access. That's why I tend to think the DO wanted Rand to use the TP and become addicted.

I certainly hope we hear more about it later!
