For all we know the third age references to aginors strength were based on hereditary memories of his shadowspawn armies and not on his one power ability at all.


That may be true. We only have that quote, Moiraine's quote, and a quote on Osan'gar's strength - or the strength he showed us. You can't tell with males - not even Rand could. Without the BWB we don't know Ishamael, Aginor, Demandred or Lanfear's strengths.

I don't think RJ came up with an overly elaborate plan to make pseudostrengths for the Forsaken. He's said that Aginor was 2nd in strength, and I don't see the gain in lying about it. I think that he was 2nd in strength, along with Demandred and Lanfear, but because he was a lab rab he was not good with the Power or combat.
