Smells of fan fiction? You realized RJ himself published A WHOLE BOOK called The World of RJ's WOT? That's about as fan fictiony as it gets. So I think its a bit disingenuous to accuse Sanderson of the same. If anything both are guilty of clarity and wide scale world building in the Tolkein mold.

EDIT: Just realized obnoxiously off topic, but I always get mad at accusations of fan fiction by Sanderson Mods please delete if you feel appropriate.


I think you've missed the point. Brandon Sanderson was/is a fan of tWoT - that's an inescapable fact. Perhaps you're willing to dismiss this little tidbit as unimportant, though I think most would agree that its a significant and unavoidable truth. Sanderson has explicitly stated that he has no intentions of mimicing Jordan's style, but rather adapting his writing style to the tWoT universe. Sanderson, though, is a fan of the series, and I think it's safe to say that a fan of this series would approach the writing of it differently than a non-fan.

In other words, Sanderson the writer simply cannot, on a subconscious level, disassociate himself from Sanderson the fan.

Notice I never called the style and writing bad, but rather observed that Sanderson's hand is apparent.
