It is not a fencing grip, nor is it really a European one, it is a Japanese high guard defensive stance, and fits very well into the stylized WOT sword fighting.

The high guard position with the blade reversed creates a strong block (especially with only one hand), while retaining a strong (though positionally limited) stiking and stabing ability.
