A coward would instead mindlessly cling to life no matter what. It takes courage and fortitude to make a sacrifice on the order of ending your own existence so that you can't be used as a weapon to enslave your people.

The White Tower is at war with the Seanchan. In war you need to disarm your enemy. Any captive Aes Sedai are enemy weapons.
