You could create turbines near the shore, open a gateway several meters below the surface of the ocean, and let the ocean dump into the turbines to generate electricity. Then the water drains into the ocean and you have a fantastic violation of the conservation of energy which allows you to get out a lot more energy than you put in.
Or you could destroy the planet as you just mentioned.

It would work because there's an infinite reservoir of One Power energy that any channeler can channel by thinking about it (or then tie and leave to flow on on itself).
If the Forsaken really wanted to defeat the Light - gateways at the bottom of the ocean...
