Any evil man who can channel wants to prove that they're better than Rand. It's the nature of evil, and not really a sign of anything.

The Black Tower IMO is Moridin's baby - it's covered in his colours of black and red, which is more than a hint.

I also agree with Etzel that it was Aran'gar who commanded the Ash'aman, and probably commanded Slayer to kill Rand too. Cyndane probably appeared to Masema as the holy Dragon Reborn, but Demandred is a close second on my list.
