The explanations Etzel Send a noteboard - 28/12/2009 05:06:02 PM
Obviously Asmo was caught by surprise so just about anyone could have done the deed, but that doesn't explain:

1. Why Slayer overtly talked about killing 2 AS in the Stone and how much pleasure but didn't mention killing one of the Forsaken!

Slayer hates AS, and therefore likes to kill them most.

2. How Slayer found him in the first place. The killing seemed purely opportunistic, thus not particularly assassinish.

Slayer certainly learned from his patron that Asmo stayed with Rand. He probably spied on Asmo for a time (it's mentioned in the books that Slayer spies in TAR as well), till he finally got a good opportunity to kill Asmo, namely when he saw him strolling alone through the - at this time pretty deserted - Caemlyn Palace (a place Luc knows very well, of course).

3. How Asmodean recognized Slayer. Do you think he had a meet and greet with the Forsaken at some point... even if he did it's unlikely that Asmodean or any of the Forsaken would have been particularly impressed with what amounts to a tool in their eyes. Hell Asmo may have even reacted by trying to order him around just like all the others did with Shaidar Haran.

RJ told us that all Forsaken know Slayer and Slayer knows all Forsaken. This is supported by Slayer's PoV in WH and only logical, considering that Slayer is one of the Shadow's foremost assassins (and even mentioned in the Dark Prophecies). While Asmo was at first surprised, when Slayer appeared out of thin air, he figured out what this means a moment later, but then Slayer's bolt already took him.

All in all he doesn't jump out to me as an "obvious" choice as RJ seemed to think the killer should be to us.

I think a character called "Slayer", who is obviously - among other things - a traitor hunting assassin/bounty hunter of the Shadow and equipped with special powers by the DO seems like an obvious choice, especially since Slayer also killed or tried to kill other people in the books before, e.g. traitors of the Shadow.
