Graendal already has a massive inverted ward around the palace.

And I just don't see Graendal weaving a massive inverted ward around the place, as that would take more of the power than she has. I DEFINITELY don't see her strolling around the perimeter placing wards, she's far to decadent for that. Also, the gateway which Rand opened was NOT in sight of Graendal's palace.
She has a massive inverted ward around her palace that keeps the heat out and regulates the temperature, so she has more than enough strength to do it. She's decadent, but part of this decadence would argue that the first thing she would make sure of is that she couldn't be taken unaware.

So your name is Graendal....

The lead up was clumsy because her death scene was rather forced.
