Moghedien is more powerful in the world of Dreams than Lanfear is (we don't even know if Lanfear has prophetic dreams) and that she pulled Birgitte from T'A'R and forced her into the physical world - a feat which seemed impossible, and very well might be beyond the capabilities of any other Dreamer in the series. It just seems to fit her personality to come against an opponent somehow when they didn't expect her and when/where they were at their weakest and eliminate them.
But I'm not in contention about the Asmo murderer. As far as I'm concerned, we don't need to know the killer's identity and it isn't even on the list of things I would like to know before the series ends.

It was heavy enough to nullify her ability almost completely by TGS

The lead up was clumsy because her death scene was rather forced.
