Re: There's a first mention of Beauxbatons in chapter nine.
Camilla Send a noteboard - 18/08/2010 01:45:58 PM
It brought to mind what Legolas said about Rowling's lack of attention to the rest of the magical world. I couldn't help feeling that there was an echo of all those other wizards dawning on Rowling, too.
Yeah. A few amusing touches, though, what with the Salem mention. And Harry is evidently not bad at recognizing flags, knowing a Bulgarian flag when he sees one...
True.
Also, the "are there other schools" debate is resolved, as we are told that there is at least one in Brazil, and therefore presumably more. We still don't know about Europe, though.
They run into a few Beauxbatons (nice name, incidentally, although iirc the French translate "wand" as "baguette", which is even funnier) students in chapter nine. I have a feeling Durmstrang will get a throwaway mention too, but I may be wrong on that.
Yes, I like the names of the schools (and the fact that Hermione recognises them). I cannot help but wonder whether Madamme had absconded because she was worried about the reaction of the Death Eaters if they saw her (as she is clearly half-giant), or if I am reading too much into it.
It is also interesting that carpets, but not brooms are defined as muggle objects which cannot be enchanted.
That conversation was brilliant, and a major exception in Rowling's failure to do international stuff well. Nice touch. Though it does make one wonder how Pakistani and other immigrants function in wizarding Britain... we have the Indian Patil twins, but never in detail, unfortunately. If there's a ban on them importing their traditional flying carpets, that's not a good sign about how much they can maintain their culture and traditions.
Indeed.
I am rather disturbed that Rowling writes that the crowd around the death eaters swell. It sounds like there are others, not just the hardcore death eaters, who are happy to use this as entertainment. Although that sounds weird. I cannot imagine people doing that unmasked.
Yeah. And seeing the Death Eaters described as a "large group of people" was a bit odd as well, considering how few there end up being at the end of the book. Then again, if we're to judge by the Malfoys, the Death Eaters are a sexist reactionary lot, and while wives may participate in the fun Muggle-bullying, they evidently don't get the Death Mark or participate in the gatherings.
Were the death eaters the large group? I understood it to be a small core of death eaters who were then joined by others (who were not masked, but just joined in). I hadn't thought of their sexism, but it is quite striking now you mention it. It raises the question of where Narcissa is when Draco is alone in the wood.
Also: It struck me that "Death Eaters" is a very strange name for a group. I remember reacting to it the first time I read it, but I have since become so used to it it is not weird anymore. But really, not the best group name. It sounds like someone has thought "ok, what's scary? Death! Ok! What is more scary than death? Someone EATING Death!"
In the same vein, the spell Morsmordre for the Dark Sign is clearly inspired by the same thing, but equally odd. Biting in Death? What? Or is that spell different in English (some are changed, most aren't)?
It is the same in English. Hmmm. The spell brings to mind a possible explanation. The death's head that shows up is after all eating the snake, or the snake is coming out of it. That may have inspired the name, I suppose. Are they named from the spell, do you think?
I also like how the Death Eaters' behaviour echo that of the Twins. On a much larger scale, of course, and without any redeeming motivation, but still. Harry's thought that he feels vulnerable without a wand in the wizarding world also joins in with this point, which seems to be a major one in the beginning of this book.
Good point. Also relevant in this vein is Diggory's mentioning of a law banning all non-humans from having or using wands - a house elf doesn't need it, having magic of its own, but centaurs, kobolds and others might resent that quite a bit. The house elves thing is the beginning (except perhaps for the centaur conversation in the very first book) of the theme of the oppression of the non-human and semi-human races that will become fairly big later on.
Indeed. The casual racism (artism?) is more interesting to me than the houselves.
