Re: There's a first mention of Beauxbatons in chapter nine.

Yes, I like the names of the schools (and the fact that Hermione recognises them). I cannot help but wonder whether Madamme had absconded because she was worried about the reaction of the Death Eaters if they saw her (as she is clearly half-giant), or if I am reading too much into it.
Interesting point. It makes sense, in a way...
Were the death eaters the large group? I understood it to be a small core of death eaters who were then joined by others (who were not masked, but just joined in). I hadn't thought of their sexism, but it is quite striking now you mention it. It raises the question of where Narcissa is when Draco is alone in the wood.
The very first sentence of Harry seeing what is going on, describes a "large group" of people walking hooded and with their wands pointing upwards, no mention of followers yet. Only then does it say other people start walking around that core group. And Narcissa is among the hooded people, that was my point - that perhaps there were more hooded people than there are Death Eaters later on, for the simple reason that the wives participate in the walking around hooded, but not in Voldemort's gathering as they aren't full Death Eaters.
It is the same in English. Hmmm. The spell brings to mind a possible explanation. The death's head that shows up is after all eating the snake, or the snake is coming out of it. That may have inspired the name, I suppose. Are they named from the spell, do you think?
Seems likely, yeah... the Dutch translation has the somewhat more logical and also amusingly punny "Dooddoeners", literally "Death-doers", while a "dooddoener" is also a blatant cliché which kills a conversation, so to speak.
Indeed. The casual racism (artism?) is more interesting to me than the houselves.
I also just noted Winky's remark about how Dobby might end up getting reprimanded "like an ordinary kobold". Not surprisingly, there's also racism from one non-human race to another.
