Re: Plotplotplot (plot makes a funny noise if you say it like that).
Legolas Send a noteboard - 20/08/2010 01:55:29 PM
Both skrewts and dragons (mentioned together in that offhand way) show up in the later challenges. I suppose that is the only justification for the skrewts. I cannot say I am a great fan of Rowling's "disgusting animals wohey" thing. Perhaps it is due to her having a son. Little boys like disgusting things from what I understand.
*lol* It's mostly a Hagrid thing, don't you think?
The magical animals in general aren't all that disgusting. And Trelawny is right in her predictions again, of course: difficult times are ahead. And I suppose the thing that Harry fears most is Voldemort's return? Of course it could also be that Sirius is taken from him, which is also too close at hand for comfort.
I'm not sure they're intended to be too accurate here, but yeah, not much of a stretch to say they are.
I also like how Moody's "I knew your father" to Malfoy and "Another old friend" concerning Snape are perfectly truthful. For all the wrong reasons. He is the reverse Sirius, really. I suppose that continues the age old theme of "things are not what they seem".
Yep. What I'm wondering is where Crouch Junior got his extensive knowledge of Moody from. Voldemort himself? His own limited experience back in the day? Torturing Moody for information?
Snape's death eater past is hovering around, both in that comment and in his general fear of Moody.
True.
Also, is Moody's saying he'll only stay one year a slip of the tongue?
Not necessarily, the jinx is a good excuse, whether it's a real curse or not.
Moody's setting Neville up to help Harry in the underwater challenge is a well masked plot point. It is perfectly masked as compassion, and it is introduced before Harry is even chosen, and so we are not yet looking for anything out of the ordinary. Not that it would even be out of the ordinary if we were looking for it.
Yeah, it's clever. Again wondering where he got his information, though. I don't have the impression the teachers are told such details in advance... did Bertha Jorkins already know all the challenges?
I had fun trying to figure out the made up prophecies that Ron and Harry throw together for the moon chart. If they follow the trend from the last book, these will also come true. But I cannot figure out what treasured possession Harry loses.
I doubt it.
Ok, so I didn't try that hard. But it is food for discussion at least! And it is quite clear that I know the three first books much better than I know number 4. It is probably the lack of Lupin and Sirius.
Hehe.
The twins/Bagman enigma is still running, with two letter-writing/covert discussion moments. I am not carried away. And we get the setting up AND resolution of the "what is Hermione doing in the library" enigma in two chapters. Not a terribly great revelation, but I don't suppose that was the point.
Yeah, in hindsight it's not really that mysterious. Nor is what Hermione's been up to, really. Just keeping us on our toes and giving us enough enigmas to wonder about that we don't know which the important ones are that need focusing on.
Harry's fears that he will be the cause of Sirius' capture neatly prefigures the next book, I suppose.
True.
But why is Hagrid away? Is it really just he blast-ended skrewts? I cannot remember.
I think it's just a matter of keeping the first meeting of Hagrid and Olympe off-screen.
