Ron: He really is very silly. I wonder to what extent the Prophet linking Hermione to Harry had an effect on his resuming hostilities. I imagine it was quite important, because the implication is that she and Harry are the worthy ones, whereas Ron isn't even mentioned. It may be just me liking to spot early developing romance, but I think I am somewhat justified in doing so considering the Yule Ball debacle and the fallout from that in this book.
It's possible. We know that Hermione spent time with both of them while they weren't talking, after all, and who knows what her talks with Ron during that time were like? Though I don't think even Hermione thinks of Ron that way yet, at this point, nevermind the other way around - not consciously.
Hmmm. Not consciously, perhaps. But their actions surrounding the Yule Ball suggests it is definitely there -- Hermione is upset that Ron doesn't ask her, and Ron is upset when she goes with Krum.
Harry's thoughts on the subject in chapter 19 also emphasise how the trio is not a trio of equal friend-status. It is Harry and Ron who are best friends, and then Hermione follows second. I was a little surprised at this, because that is not how I think of them normally.
It's not the only time that is indicated. The biggest fights are always with Ron, and it's not a coincidence that it's Ron who's taken from Harry in the second task, not Hermione (and no, not just so Krum can have Hermione, either).
True. Good point.
Hermione: her inability to take in Quidditch terms is reminiscent of how Rowling misses things that do not interest her (numbers).
Yeah, while Harry's ability to take them in perfectly even when they're fancy Slavic names shows how men can perform astonishing intellectual feats for their favourite sport.
If the name had come up in any context but Quidditch, it would have been Hermione who remembered it perfectly and Harry who mangled it.

Exactly

Harry: his treatment of Ron annoys me. Especially when he knows better but decides to be a brat anyway. Then again, as Tash has been pointing out on the comm mb, that is part of how humans act.
It kind of reminded me of me, actually, I'm sure some others will recognize it too. The impulse to make that mean comment because he's feeling hurt, even though he knows it's wrong and knows it's pointless - but once it's out of the way, he can turn around fast and accept Ron's reconciliation fairly graciously.
True. Doesn't mean it isn't annoying when you spot it in other people, though

I like how he tells Cedric about the drags though. Again, that makes him a good guy.
Good old British sportsmanship. Which of course foreigners don't have, perish the thought. A wee bit racist there, perhaps.

Hmm. I don't know. It thrives on stereotypes, sure, but it is not presented as something inherent to the British. You would not expect a Slytherin to do the same.
The reconciliation between Harry and Ron is quite sweet. Hermione is right that they are stupid. I imagine Ron's feelings were pretty much like Mrs Weasley after the Quidditch Cup. Perhaps that is why that scene was there originally (it didn't fit so well at the time, I thought, even if it was lovely): in order to set an emotional pattern for this one without Rowling having to spell it out.
I don't know if it's really so similar... I rather doubt Ron's primary emotion during the task was to be afraid for Harry's life or health, really. And the decisive click comes when he stays up most of the night there in chapter nineteen, surely.
No? He is terribly pale when he shows up to congratulate Harry.
Decisive click?
Dobby: *sigh* I enjoy his wardrobe. And I find it interesting that he talked down his own pay.
Seems Rowling really does want us to believe house-elves like working hard for little pay, and that it's only the excesses and cruelty we're supposed to condemn.
Yes. Although one could of course argue that the image we are given is one of a culture which has become ingrained during thousands of years of servitude.
Winky: I assume, because of its impeccable coherence, Winky's wardrobe was given to her complete by Crouch. He does not strike me as the type to dismiss a house-elf with just a sock -- it would be a complete matching set of proper clothes. Winky's reaction, shame, is also interesting. It does suggest that the desire to serve is based in some very strong cultural codes.
Oh, I hadn't even realized that, the wardrobe thing. Good call. See my own post for my thoughts on her reaction.
Dumbledore: his genius shines through in his treatment of Winky and Dobby. I love how he told them they could call him a barmy old codger.
That suffered a bit in translation again. But yes, typical.
Hehe. What did they call him in Dutch?
