Sirius' note saying that ``whoever put your name in the Goblet shouldn't be feeling too happy right now'' is a very good false clue. We are led to believe Harry is getting one over on Voldemort, but in fact he is following Voldemort's plan to a t.
Indeed. Though perhaps we really should know better, what with knowing that Voldemort needs/wants to get his hands on Harry, not just have him die in some freak accident.
True. Although I have noticed in the way I read that information introduced that early (first chapters are especially bad for this) will almost always be shelved away out of sight because I expect later developments to highlight what is important. Of course, that may be why Rowling always managed to fool me. Except with Snape

After that first time.
It isn't a major plot point, but the "Who is Hermione going with" deal is handled quite well. We got the hints that Krum was hanging around her and looking surly when she was with Harry in the last batch of chapters, and now of course the enigma has been voiced explicitly. And then, there is the description of Krum arriving with ``A pretty girl in blue robes Harry didn't know''. And then the reveal. I like it.
Indeed. Though it seems a bit unlikely that he would not recognize Hermione just because of the make-up and different hair. Rebekah's link on the other board makes clear how big a difference those things can make - but the woman is still recognizable as the same woman. Of course at a first glance from a distance he might not have recognized her, but then if he's apparently seen enough of her to decide she's "pretty", it's a bit strange.
Well, Hermione's main characteristics apart from being a girl (obviously) is her bushy hair and her teeth. The teeth have been shrunk (and the boys don't seem to quite have taken that in yet), and the hair has been forced to conform. What remains, eyes and facial structure, are the aspects most liable to change due to make-up. And her posture is remarked on as out of the ordinary because of the absence of books.
And the Room of Requirement is introduced.
That one is very sneaky, Rowling must be quite proud of it. I wonder if she even did it on purpose - and if we wonder about that, it means it's neatly done, obviously.
Indeed. It is one of my favourite early drips of information.
Karkaroff's conversation with Snape is interesting. It makes Snape suspect again by association. And it introduces the enigma of what they are discussing, which will be explained right at the end.
Yeah, this would've been more obvious if we'd known about the Dark Mark, but we don't really, so...
True. But Karkaroff has been established as a (former) Death Eater already, so Snape's apparent intimacy with him reflects badly on him.
We also get the news that Hagrid's mother is a giant. The mixed breed problem crops up again, as a major thematic thread throughout.
Yeah, and again with the justifications of why discriminating against giants makes sense - which we'll see confirmed later on. The problem with Rowling's dealing with the theme is that the bigotry often is at least partially justified...
Hmm. Well, not really. I think one of her main themes is that birth is not a decisive factor in character. And all the half-giants we know (granted, a very small sample) are perfectly normal (to the extent that normal exists in this universe) people, despite their murderous parentage. The same goes for werewolves. Some use the infection as an excuse to be bad, but that is not down to their werewolfness (that is a word, dammit!), as demonstrated by Lupin.
And Rita Skeeter's impossible knowledge is introduced.
And Hermione gets on the case. Rather liked that too.
Yes

A few other things I noticed that are more or less plot-related:
- Krum, unlike Harry, has done his homework, he's not going to go swimming in that lake just for fun.
Oh my god! I missed that. I cannot believe I missed that. Of course!

- Percy doesn't respect Bagman much more than his brothers, but still assumes that they have been bothering him and that if anyone's done anything wrong, it's them. Wrongly, of course.
To be fair, that isn't entirely unjustified. Him having lived with the twins all these years. They are usually to blame.
- Harry forgetting, rather ironically, to put a bezoar in his Potions assignment. Making it all the stranger that he's the only one to think of it in book six (or, well, to read it in the book).
Heh, yes. I must say, I cannot really see the point of putting bezoars in an antidote. If you have a bezoar at hand, surely the antidote is superfluous?
