Interesting. I'm not entirely sure what it's supposed to mean, though... what does the author of the quote mean by "see narrative realities"? Is it just the ability to get immersed, to suspend disbelief where necessary but evaluate the fictional world by its own rules? Or the ability to see and appreciate the good story behind the unreal elements?

Dumbledore's past is one of the few things (along with that idiotic Elder Wand thing, but don't get me started) that really isn't foreshadowed at all (except a bit in book si, making me wonder if Rowling didn't come up with it relatively late... perhaps not. I'm tempted to say he can be like this about Aberforth because Rowling hadn't fleshed out their backstory yet, but perhaps she had and just kept him from making any hints about it.

If we assume she did know, your points make sense, and yes, I agree that presenting himself as the bad side would not help at all.
