Re: Makes sense. Legolas Send a noteboard - 25/08/2010 12:15:12 AM
I quite like that bit, now you remind me of it. ;)

I was afraid you would. :P But I'll save my ranting on the issue until we actually get there.
Well, she is a teenager, too. It is hard to realise because Harry is younger than her, and she therefore seems grown-up. But she is only, what? 17?

Should be, yeah. And fair enough, can't expect her to be all mature yet at seventeen.
Hehe. I don't remember that. I quite look forward to it now.

It's a fairly entertaining storyline, that whole thing. And again, quite effective.
Yes. If they allow themselves to be analyzed in this way, I see no reason not to do it.

I guess some might say we could spend all this time rereading and analyzing and discussing on other, more literary books? ;) But it's fun and not useless, I think - as good a practice as any other.
Although there is a wonderful quote that I think Roh sent me ages ago, which defines a geek as someone ``trained by much immersion in the unreal to be able to see narrative realities''.

I think that is what much of this is about (and why a lot of people who are not accustomed to approach narrative in the same way are unable to see the interest in Harry Potter).

Interesting. I'm not entirely sure what it's supposed to mean, though... what does the author of the quote mean by "see narrative realities"? Is it just the ability to get immersed, to suspend disbelief where necessary but evaluate the fictional world by its own rules? Or the ability to see and appreciate the good story behind the unreal elements?
Yes. Far be it from me to defend Harry's teenage monsterness. I agree.

*lol* Glad we got that cleared up. Though I don't know if I'd have called that particular thing "monsterness", considering he's only screwing himself there.
True. But it does show how he does not allow his own issues to come in the way of the task at hand: to convince Hagrid that all families have dark sides. The alternative way of doing that would be to present himself as the bad side, but that would defeat the object, I think.

Dumbledore's past is one of the few things (along with that idiotic Elder Wand thing, but don't get me started) that really isn't foreshadowed at all (except a bit in book six), making me wonder if Rowling didn't come up with it relatively late... perhaps not. I'm tempted to say he can be like this about Aberforth because Rowling hadn't fleshed out their backstory yet, but perhaps she had and just kept him from making any hints about it.

If we assume she did know, your points make sense, and yes, I agree that presenting himself as the bad side would not help at all.
