Re: Madame Maxime, Crouch, Snape, Twins, Fudge and Neville
Legolas Send a noteboard - 26/08/2010 03:22:14 PM
Madame Maxime tries to oil up to Hagrid to find out what the next task is. At least that is how Hagrid describes it. I wonder whether she was actually trying to reach out, and he misinterpreted. But that is idle speculation.
I'm with you there. There's a throw-away mention of her watching the Trio visit Hagrid at some point. Sure, it could be her spying, but what's the point of that? I think she's genuinely interested by now.
Crouch: When the imperius curse was used on Harry, he felt euphoria. Crouch, who really seems to be struggling against it, is raving about work. Is that an indication that what makes him happy is work (he has been described as rather ambitious), or has he just snapped and I should stop reading things into it?
I think he's snapped - he's clearly not under the Imperius anymore when Harry and Krum meet him, as he wouldn't be there otherwise, but the excess use of it seems to have ruined his mind. At least temporarily.
Snape: Why does he block Harry's way? Is it just so Harry and Ron can speculate about his being badbadbad? I don't feel it makes sense for the character. Yes, he will take any excuse to vex Harry, but I like to think that he would be intelligent enough to realise that if Harry is trying to find the headmaster and speaking of Crouch, who he knows is missing, he should step out of the way. I suppose he doesn't believe Harry, which makes it somewhat easier to swallow.
I don't really get it either. It does make more sense if he simply doesn't believe Harry...
Hagrid: I love his reaction to Karkaroff spitting on the ground in front of Dumbledore.
Yeah, typical Hagrid. And yet Karkaroff had a point, really - from his PoV it does all look very suspicious. Although surely he must realize Voldemort's impending return might have to do something with it as well.
The twins: The ``It's blackmail'' / ``I don't care'' discussion fits nicely with the theory of the twins' distinct personalities. George said it would be blackmail. Is Fred more reckless?
I saw that too, and yes, that was the theory. Equally interesting is that in the fact of Ron's criticisms, George suddenly ignores his own reservations and goes through with it after all - he's the one who sends the letter in the end.
Fudge: he's a bigot, surprise, surprise.
Yeah, we knew that, but confirmation again, and early hints of the Ministry not being too willing to see the writing on the wall.
Neville: I like how we are finally given the explanation for Neville's connection to the cruciatus curse. It highlights one of the core ideas that I picked up from fiction when I was a kid (it is one of my strongest literary memories -- like an aha! moment, and it is one of the reasons why I feel so strongly that children should read), that a person you think you know and who you find rather silly can have a very strong, hidden, backstory which would completely change the way you see them if you knew. Neville's inability to do magic, for example, looks very different in light of this information -- it is no longer simply incompetence, but (certainly as I understand it), the result of trauma. He has seen the result of magic on his parents who he has to keep meeting despite how they do not recognise him: he is therefore not allowed to simply put it behind him as Harry has been able to do to a certain extent. I'd say this is the moment when Neville's character becomes very, very interesting.
*nods* It becomes stronger when we actually see them in the next book, but yeah. There are other cases like it, of course - Snape in a way, and Luna comes to mind as well. No wonder then that Neville and Luna end up together, perhaps.
