Well, it makes sense. TV news are updated more frequently. They would therefore give him release from the worry that Voldemort could be out killing hundreds of people in one fell swoop. He is using the same principle with the TV news as he does with the prophet: if it is not first or on the front page, that means everything is all right. He is paying more attention to the muggle news because he knows would not be looking for it. He assumes the Prophet, having magical experience, is aware of what to look for for him.
I understand all that. I just thought, if he was expecting a mass muggle killing or something epic like that, that he would have paid more attention to the Prophet. They're clearly not sharing everything with the muggle press. Just seems like he's looking at it backwards.
Later on, when Voldemort does start killing people (or his followers do, at any rate), it is reported in the muggle press as a massive accident with the bridge, amongst other things.
