(Again with the trying to be concise, so I just dropped the paragraphs where I agree with what you say but have nothing to add.)

Dumbledore is in general very suggested in these chapters. People keep referring to him. Mrs Weasley uses him as the basis for her argument with Sirius. I cannot help feeling that this is the book where Dumbledore fails. Hmmm. That is too harsh. I am thinking about the decision whether to tell Harry or not. I suppose his position is an impossible one. He cannot tell Harry everything (because that would leave him more open to an attack from Voldemort), and he apparently recognises the danger of incomplete information (quite rightly); but again, he must know Harry will not react well to being kept entirely out of the loop.

He does fail, really. Above all he shouldn't have avoided Harry so much.


I suppose it is a matter of hindsight being 20/20.
I am not sure another course of action would have been better, though. We know this one did not turn out well, but there were significant dangers in the others open to him as well. I suppose the best thing would have been to tell Harry why he couldn't tell Harry.... But you can bet Harry would have been annoying about that, too.

Mrs Weasley: She is getting thinner. I like all the information that communicates. Rowling seems to use it in general as a signal of (a lack of) mental well-being: if you are thinning, you are worried or under great strain. She did it for Sirius as well, and Lupin. I am sure there are more.

And she's evidently not too happy about Sirius, because she feels he'll put Harry in danger, and perhaps her own children too in the process. You have to wonder to what extent the traumas of her past - her brothers dying in the previous war - influence her fear for her family this time around. Her brothers were twins as well, so it might not be too much of a stretch to guess she makes a link on some level with Fred and George.


Good point. I hadn't made that connection. It makes sense.

The twins: also back in top form. Their handling of Harry's anger is reminiscent of their handling his shame in book 3: they go straight to the source and attempt to fix it (extendable ears). I read their sudden entry as an attempt to puncture the situation, and it works.

It does work. And since I'm reading every Twins scene as confirmation or disproval of my theory about their characters now, I looked a bit again at who says and does what. Fred still has most of the daring and outgoing remarks, while George is the one described as the most resentful about the Percy thing.


Nice. I had forgotten to keep my eyes on that. I like that she is consistent.

Ginny: her adoration for Bill and her "noise like an angry cat" are both endearing. As is her ability to lie with a straight face.

Note also her casual "Oh hi, Harry" entrance, confirming that she's stopped pining over him and trying to focus on other things. This is the book where she really becomes part of the gang, along with Neville and Luna, so her character needs more depth that's being provided in bits and pieces here. George also makes a remark about her considerable hexing skills.


Quite. And we have already seen her hexes in action at the end of the last book (I think. Jesus, my memory is like a sieve).

Sirius: his bitterness at being locked up in that horrible house is established. As much of a plot point as a character point, I suppose. The opposition between him and Mrs Weasley about who is going to be Harry's surrogate parent is interesting. Mrs Weasley is probably right that Sirius is less "parent" and more "friend", and maybe also that a lot of this is grounded in his memories of James. But I don't see this as a major problem. If anything, Sirius understands Harry's position. Mrs Weasley's position is one of wishful thinking -- we know Harry will not be content to hang around in the dark without any information. No matter what Dumbledore says.

Agreed, Mrs. Weasley's position clearly isn't the ideal one either. Perhaps because of her history (see above), her take on how to treat Harry is too protective and as a result counterproductive. It's kind of hard to say to what extent she's right about Sirius. He doesn't really seem to overestimate Harry that I can see. He's a lot closer to the right tack than she is.


I think you've hit the nail on the head with the connection to her brothers. I am not sure whether my impression of them comes from something said in the books or is wholly a matter of Shoebox Project influence, but I think of them as marauder-like, similar to Fred and George. If so, it must terrify her to see recklessness anywhere near her children. That must be why she has always been so happy with Percy's rule-orientedness. And it must be made much worse by Voldemort being back.

I like the insight we are given into Sirius' past in these chapters. The way he hates his family, the introduction of his brother (important plot point), running away to live with the Potters. It mirrors Harry again, to a certain extent, except where Sirius' hell is the extreme pureblood magical family, Harry's is at the other end of the spectrum in the extreme muggleness of the Dursleys. I don't think Rowling is a fan of extremes.

Yeah, that much is clear. The family tree is great, allowing character development, plot clues and discussion of the theme of racial purity at the same time. I'm wondering now, though... is Kreacher's apparent devotion to Voldemort here an act? I'd have to reread DH to be sure, but shouldn't Kreacher resent Voldemort and his followers for what happened with Regulus?


Does he know? That Voldemort killed him? Don't the trio tell him that later on? Hmmm. I am unsure now.
