Draco: who in their right mind would make Draco a prefect. Seriously. Are they picked by their heads of houses? Because I could see Snape doing it (if nothing else to get in Malfoy's good books) -- but Dumbledore?
It's not as if there are many people to choose from - about five, if that assumption about the average numbers is correct, and two of them are Crabbe and Goyle. Blaise Zabini seems like a marginally better candidate, but we only get to know him in book six and I suppose Rowling didn't want someone the readers didn't know at all for Slytherin. The male Ravenclaw one is mentioned for the first time, I think?
But yeah, it might be more for reader convenience and plot convenience then for in-story reasons.
Ginny: Ginny becomes a steadily more interesting character. She takes charge of Harry when he is lost without his friends, she is comfortable around everyone (including Luna, who unsettles everyone else).
Yeah. The train scene marks the formation of the Second Trio, so to speak, the core group of the DA that will back up the Trio at the end of the book. And of course Ginny is closer to the main Trio than the other two are, thanks to being a sister to one, confidante and best female friend to another and future love interest to the last.
Luna: Luna is lovely. Weird, very strange, but lovely. I like how she seems to have taken a step back from life and appears to look at it from the outside, observing. I also like the Quibbler. Nutty as it is. I also like how her house marks her as intelligent, while her actions make her seem ... somewhat less so? Her crazy ravings are somewhat made legitimate by her house. Or perhaps that is just me.
And by her being more observant than she seems, as proven by the Thestrals comment.
Neville: I like his geekiness -- that is the only way of describing it I think. He has found something that interests him and he is talking about it as if it should also interest other people. I love Neville.
Good point.
I also really like how simply he says that they believe Harry, putting Seamus in his place. And how he dreams about a giant pair of scissors wearing his grandmother's hat. Can you say Freud?
Hehe. That is a nice touch. I kinda sympathize with Seamus in that scene, though. He's clearly hesitant about where he stands, not fully buying his mother's views but unsure about what exactly is going on. Can you blame him? But then he gets one of Harry's temper tantrums hurled his way, and it's no wonder he gets less inclined to see Harry's side at that point, rather than more. Though he'll come around later.
Which reminds me of the thing I'd forgotten in the other reply, will add it in a sec.
Harry: Could another reason for not making Harry a prefect be that some students might not do as he said, that it might bring to the fore the scepticism towards him fostered by the Daily Prophet? The more I think about it, the more reasons I find. The one Dumbledore gives later on is only one among many.
Seems likely.
Umbridge: EVIL BITCH. *shudder*
I can't talk about her in a balanced way.
Aye. Fantastic villain.
McGonnagall: I love her to bits. I like how much sense she makes, I love how she is good, I absolutely adore the "have a biscuit" comment. I like how she sees through Umbridge, just as I liked it when she saw through Lockhart and Trelawny, and I like how she sees the threat that is Umbridge and attempts to warn Harry. I also like how she recognises Hermione's words in Harry's mouth.
The key word there is "attempts". She knows she isn't getting through, she knows she has to put it to him straight or he won't understand. But she doesn't. Why? Surely she's not afraid or having to watch her step - not yet, not at this point. There is absolutely no reason why she can't tell him how it is in terms a five-year old could understand. Dumbledore isn't the only one failing Harry in this book, if you ask me.
