Re: Ron, Umbridge, McGonagall, Hagrid, Cho, Hermione, Harry

Ron: his continual awareness of poverty shows up again. It is mentioned twice in connection with the gold coins. I cannot remember this having any real plot relevance from here on out, but it is an important source for his insecurities, I think. And one of his danger points: he has a tendency to equate success and money with the good choices. Always dangerous. And of course it is one of the things exploited by the Slytherin song. I wonder, does this show up as one of the great arguments later on? In Deathly Hollows?
I don't think so... but can't say for sure.
The only thing I can think of is if it comes up when he is faced with the horcrux.
Umbridge: her evil evilness continues. I like how arbitrary (hmmm, no, that is not the word ... selective, perhaps? biased?) "justice" is a mark of the bad guys who are ostensibly on the side of "good". Snape and Umbridge especially.
You cannot possibly mention Snape and Umbridge in the same breath.
She is way more evil than him. Well, more annoying, anyway. But I suppose there are similarities, yes. Of course, she merely follows Fudge's example there - I seem to recall you commenting on his willingness to flout his own rules when convenient, in that early PoA scene in the Leaky Cauldron. And in Harry's trial, as well.
Trust me, no one is more reluctant to lump Snape and Umbridge together more than me. I think it is less a matter of innate immorality, and more a reflection of what Harry picks up on. Teenagers and children are notoriously sensitive to the "unfair", and that characterises both teachers, and forms a core part of Harry's dislike for them.
Still, I can't help thinking Fudge would be shocked if he saw some of the things Umbridge does. He doesn't have her notions about racial purity, or her sadistic streak, and I don't think he really knows about them.
Good point. And no, I don't think he does. She says herself that there are some things it is better Fudge not know.
And her way of talking to Hagrid, as if he were a deaf moron, makes me want to kill her dead. Which means it is very effective. Well done, Rowling.
Indeed. Umbridge strikes me for some reason as being of low or questionable background in some way, and overcompensating for it by looking down on half-bloods and anyone she perceives as ranking lower, while sucking up to the likes of Malfoy (father and son both). There has to be something to account for her prejudice. Could it be that she's Muggle-born? Or a Squib - I can't remember if we ever see her actually using her wand. Though I guess Squibs wouldn't have wands in the first place, so maybe not.
Hmm. I cannot really imagine that. Not a squib, certainly, or Fudge would not have placed so much trust in her, I think. Could be muggle-born. Or maybe just from a poor family? I don't really want to point it out, but it could be she is compensating for height as well
' />McGonnagall: I am impressed she does not turn Umbridge into a toad. It must have been so very, very tempting.
McGonagall's initial punishment did seem sort of low, though of course Umbridge's is ridiculous. The having that decree ready at precisely that time rather strains credulity, though, unless we are to suppose that Umbridge gave Malfoy a hint to maximally provoke the Gryffindors right when she had her decree. I like how Angelina's attempt to force Umbridge's hand comes back like a boomerang, though - cleverly done by Rowling, and showing Umbridge's resentful side.
Hmm. Well, Rowling has covered it by showing there is previous provocation which could make Umbridge request the powers, and I have no trouble imagining her carrying it around in her handbag without telling anyone so that she can brandish it in just this way once her authority is (inevitably) challenged.
I also like her horror at the realisation that Harry's mind is linked with Voldemort's.
Yeah. Who wouldn't be horrified, really... I don't really remember if we're going to see Seamus and Dean reflect back on this, but they must be shocked too.
Yes.
Hagrid: I hadn't missed him, and the storyline he brings into the book really does not appeal to me. I like how the trio hold the story of Dementors back as a bargaining chip to get the story of the Giants, though. And that it works. It's not really a good sign: Hagrid has just said that it is more than his job is worth to tell them, and then he is willing to trade information just like that. Granted, they had guessed the main part, but...
I liked the story, really. But yes, he's terrible at keeping secrets - though surprisingly good at keeping that other secret, at the same time.
You mean Grump or Gamp, Gump or whatever his name is?
Cho: I am not a fan. Like Harry's shouting, her crying is too... something. But, she provides a perfect set-up for Hermione shining, so I forgive her.
I don't really mind her here. I like her less at the Valentine's date, though of course she has ample justification for her reaction there as well. The only point that really counts against her in the whole thing is wanting to have a date there in the first place.
Ick. That is a deadly sin on its own.
Hermione: Lovely. Not only having correctly deduced the situation, she cuts to the chase. Her look of disgust at Ron's reaction to the information that Harry and Cho kissed is wonderful beyond words, and Hermione's explanation of the turmoil of Cho's brain is so to the point. But the crowning moment is of course the teaspoon comment.
So it is. Ron's reaction does seem a tad exaggerated - his parents are rather puritan. Well, the whole wizarding world seems rather puritan, really, but his parents in particular (which considering the way they acted themselves at Hogwarts is rather hypocritical). That "scarlet woman" bit is priceless, I don't remember now which book that was in.
Scarlet woman. What was that? I remember it, but I have no idea. Was it Ginny who said it?
Harry: I am not sure what to make of his dream. The false pretences bit of it. Is it because his subconscious knows that he is not actually in love with her, only interested in her because she is popular and looks good? Don't get me started on the phallic broomstick that Hermione tells him to give her.
I hadn't thought of that, and could quite happily have continued not thinking of it. Thank you so much.
Well, I don't know whether it is better that he is told to give the broom stick to Cho (I realise the way I phrased it may have made it sound like he was told to give it to Hermione). It makes sense, kind of. A sort of castration fear. Being tied down because he has promised something to Cho.
