Re: The twins, the teachers, Cho, Snape, James Sirius, Wormtail, Lupin, Lily, Harry and McGonagall.
Camilla Send a noteboard - 05/10/2010 09:19:28 AM
Twins: I think the moment they decided that they would no longer care about getting into trouble is the moment I realised this would be one of my favourite books of the series. I love the havoc they wreak. And how they set the stage for the teachers' banding together. And then when they finally decide to leave … the conversation they hold between themselves. It is adorable. And then the final moment of advertisement (and the excellent discount idea) -- and Peeves' salute. It all has me giggling like a madwoman. It makes me happy. It is the perfect counterpoint to the horror and Evil that is Umbridge. Once again, breaking the rules entirely is the only way out of her world.
I love it when they get to talking fast and having one thought at the same time. It's brilliant. The scene where they leave is simply brilliant. You're right, Peeves' salute is wonderful. They took it so over the top that Umbridge couldn't even fathom what they were doing or what was going on. She does not do well with disorder and I love it when she has to.
Indeed

The teachers: I have said it before, and I will say it again. Nothing quite warms my heart like the teachers of Hogwarts banding together with the students to make Umbridge's life miserable. I like Flitwick's pointed comment. It sums up very neatly the trouble with totalitarianism. But the finest moment is probably McGonagall telling Peeves that the chandelier unscrews the other way.
I think this is my favorite book for McGonagall. She isn't a character with the opportunity to show a lot of range, but her against Umbridge allows for her to be more fleshed out.
Yes. That is a problem for a lot of the teachers. Children see their teachers from the one perspective, and teachers have to restrain themselves and present a certain façade in class. Umbridge allows us to peak behind it because she strains it.
Cho: I feel it is saying something that when Cho and Harry argue, I am on Harry's side. She really is quite astonishingly dim and irrational at times. I am glad Harry switches her in for a more sensible girl.
Cho is ridiculous. I'm guessing Rowling always knew she wanted Harry with Ginny but didn't want them together before they had dated other people which is why we get stuck with Cho. Harry had to date someone we were happy to see the back of. At least, that's my guess. I can't stand her.
Yes, I think you are right about the reasons for Cho being there. She is also a walking talking warning against falling in love with someone just because they are pretty and good at Quidditch (or, you know, another sport).
Snape: Harry interprets him as the weak victim of strong bullies in the memory. I think that is a mistake. And not just because of the ``Harry is always wrong'' rule. First of all, we are given this out of context. It is one memory, which does not provide us with the story of earlier encounters. I feel fairly certain that there is a varied pattern there. I don't think they are picking on him because he is weak; quite the contrary, I think they are doing what the twins did to Dudley in an earlier book (although as I see it in a less problematic way): they are picking on him for being part of a group which picks on the weak -- for being associated with the dark arts. The particular comments may not be related to that, but they are the superstructure, not the motivation.
The fact that Snape attacks James when his back is turned backs this up and serves as direct provocation for the more humiliating retaliation. Sirius' impedimenta spell merely held him down; Snape draws blood (to be fair, he is probably also spurred on by the proximity of Lily). His reaction to Lily's help (calling her a mudblood) is also somewhat explained by his embarrassment at this point, but it still speaks volumes about what he considers acceptable.
Yes. I wonder whether it is the mudblood comment that makes this Snape's worst memory, or whether it is the being dangled upside down.
I don't know that I'll ever understand Snape calling Lily mudblood there. I know he is embarrassed, but she is the love of his life. He doesn't really see her as muggle-born from what I've read, so his comment here makes no sense for me except in the bigger picture that he had to do something unforgivable to lose Lily's loyalty.
People do stupid things. People in love do especially stupid things. I don't see it as unrealistic. Keep in mind they are teenagers.
James: He is a little full of himself, and clearly approaching Lily in entirely the wrong way, but I don't think his comment to Lily that his motivation for mistreating Snape is merely ``because he exists'' is something to be taken at face value. I stick to my reading as I explained it above. James is arrogant, but he is not bad.
He is arrogant, and here I'm sure he is at his worst. I do like how Harry doesn't try to rationalize what James did and instead sides with Snape. I don't agree with his perception, but I do like how Harry is able to admit that maybe James wasn't as perfect as he had built him up to be.
I agree.
Sirius: I like that everything he does is done in a dashing way. His comment about Wormtail wetting himself with excitement is cutting, but at this time Harry (who is our resident standard of morality) has been annoyed for a while and thinking that James should ``tell Wormtail to get a grip on himself''.
His comment that he wishes it were the full moon is more problematic, in a way, considering how horrible that is for Lupin. But it serves to establish him even more as someone who lives for daring adventures and danger. Possibly because everything is too easy -- he is not the least worried about his exams.
He is a little dismissive of what must be painful for Lupin to think about or discuss, and while I don't like that particular part, I really do like Sirius here. I almost wonder why James is the leader when I read this passage, just because Sirius seems so cool to me.
I know! I have actually never really thought of James as the "leader". I always saw it as a joint operation between James and Sirius.
Wormtail: He is showing all the traits we have come to expect, being weak and sycophantic. It is perhaps a little too exaggerated -- it makes it less likely that James would trust his life to him.
I think it is overdone as well, but maybe they were both so arrogant they didn't mind how overt Wormtail's hero worship was. Perhaps as they got a handle on their arrogance later Wormtail got a handle on his fawning?
That makes sense.
Lupin: Lovely as always. Level-headed. I have heard him called weak because he does not stop the scene, but if my reading is right and this is part of a larger feud, his staying out of it makes sense.
I agree. I lost sympathy for Snape when he attacked from behind. I don't like what James did after, but Snape showed no honor in that action so I don't mind that Lupin didn't step in. I think he learned from watching this though, but I have nothing besides a gut feeling to base that on right now.
True.
Lily: She is cool. I like both her standing up for Snape and her ultimate rejection of him.
I'm glad Harry gets to see Lily in this moment, and in it's fuller context later on. His mother was a very strong, capable woman and he got to see an example of this. Even though his image of his father is dented, he has to be proud of who she was.
Indeed.
Harry: I like how he takes Snape's side in the memory. Especially as I don't. It is a side to his character that … I suppose it is what makes him the hero -- especially in Rowling's universe. It is interesting that he thinks that it would be acceptable to do it to Malfoy.
Yes. The parallel between Draco and Snape is a strong one to me, and for Harry to feel pity for Snape while wishing the same treatment on Malfoy seems to be missing something to me. James must have thought picking on Snape to be alright on the same terms that Harry thinks it would be okay to do that to Malfoy. Harry can be smart at times, I don't know how he misses this one.
I think it may be due to the earlier images he has seen of Snape's childhood. He is identifying with him because of them. He has no such reference point for Draco (although I think it is fairly obvious that his home life is not stellar either).
I am a little annoyed that he does not think of the mirror when he is so desperate to talk to Sirius. Yes, I know I said it was part of a beautifully structured plot, but on the level of character it is a little unsatisfying.
Gaping plot hole to me. I understand it from the structural standpoint as you say, but seriously?
Well, I wouldn't say gaping plot hole. I don't think he has opened the present yet, so he does not know it is a two-way mirror. And he put it aside with the resolution that he would not look at it. She has provided a plausible reason for it not being used. It is just that considering the danger he is running, it is annoying for me as a reader to know that he has another option. I know I didn't think about it the first time I read it, though. Like Harry, I had forgotten it.
His whole expedition really is problematic. As Hermione points out, Dumbledore's sacrifice would be in vain if he got caught. And he shows that he is aware that it would reflect very badly on McGonagall. Not to mention that this is not vital stuff. The only possible upshot will be to ease his mind. It is on par with running around risking his life in book 3 (before we knew Sirius was a good guy).
McGonagall: Reading her interaction with Umbridge is a joy. Her mix of ignoring her, correcting her and being downright rude (in a polite way) is wonderful. And when she finally snaps, there is that feeling of unleashing of power which I like so much in Dumbledore. Yes, I gush
' />
' />"Are you quite certain you wouldn't like a cough drop Dolores" is freaking brilliant. Everything in that scene is priceless. And the jibe about Harry having good marks from every qualified instructor he'd had. That interview is a beautiful piece of writing.
