While I agree with your points, I'd also add that it doesn't help when many epic fantasy fansites are male-dominated :P

But as you mentioned, Erikson's readership seems even more skewed than that of Jordan or (debatably) even Martin. Which does seem unfair as in some ways he writes better women than either of them.


There are only a few rough estimates available (book sales, mostly), but it seems that only in certain subgenres of SF and fantasy (the grimdark type) are there still more male than female readers. As for Martin, GoT has a large female viewership (even my sister, who has never read any of the books and expressed surprised that I even knew of the series, is a fan of the HBO series), yet Erikson does not. But even then, there seem to be more female readers of the Malazan books than of Bakker's series, about which I've only encountered the rare woman who claimed to like the series after the first couple of books :P
