In other words, books that are 12.99 - 14.50 are the ebook equivalent of a hardcover, which retails for 20-30 bucks. The ebook version is roughly half regular price. Ebooks for books that have been out for a while are considerably cheaper. For example, on Amazon, "Sword of Shannara" (first thing that came to mind for some reason :P) is 7.99 + any applicable shipping for the paperback version, and 6.39 for the kindle version.

Whether it's worth it is up to you, but it's not as bad as you're thinking.
