Right now a lot of good books go unpublished because some publisher wasn't willing tot take the risk with the book. With e-books publishers will be able to publish books as e-books only for little cost which will encourage them to take more chances. Paperless books have also made it much easier to self publish. There are some really good authors out there who got started by distributing free e-books and audio books on line.

Musicians need not spend an entire fortune paying a studio to record their music now. The widespread availability of software that could turn a computer into a recording studio in its own right has allowed bands who could not get contracts for whatever reasons to get their music out to the masses. Some of them catch on and make it and then get picked up by the major labels and some still flop but either way the availability of music has never been greater.
I can see much the same for e-authors who can't seem to get a publisher to pick them up. They can utilize the same software to create their own (hopefully edited) book and make it available. They can do this right from the home computer, no need t pay a publishers and their multiple proofreaders, cover designers, printers, typesetters, and so on.
I would love to read some shorter works by unknown authors. There just might be some really good writers out there that don't have the networking to get a contract or the contacts to get his or her name out there. With e-readers they at least have a chance.
