The Diadochi or however you spell them did make a good run at maintaining significant portions of Alexander's empire, and it did not break up nearly as badly as AH's empire. Hawkwing made something from nothing and sustained it for decades with his will and ruling ability. Alexander took daddy's innovative army out to play, conquered a couple of kingdoms (which previous experiences such as the Greco-Persian wars and Anabasis indicated was ripe for the taking anyway), and after he died his successors divided them into a couple of kingdoms that lasted a while. Most of them were swallowed up by Rome or the Parthians eventually. Nothing that large could last without Hawkwing, and no one came as close to him as Ptolemy or Selueccus.
