Shouldn't it have a different name? Didn't marriage between two individuals (a man and a woman by the way) start because of religion well before any type of governmental structure?


I mean, I don't think in a material way it makes an ounce of difference but I think it would make it clear to those who get confused that it is a different thing. I think the state should offer "civil unions" instead of "marriage" - exactly the same as it offers now but rebranded, strictly secular and for all without prejudice based on sexuality. The term marriage would then be completely free from the regulation of the state and a private matter dealt with by individuals.

Let's not get off on a "seperate but equal" debate or a name debate. This is more of a "Didn't marriage start because of religion?" debate.
