One brain C4, coming up... jh Send a noteboard - 15/09/2009 12:00:26 PM
Basic relativity says that the speed of light in vacuum is c... something like 299,792,458 metres per second. That is fast. Even faster than those fast going trains in your youth.

Now we get to the complicated bit. the speed of light is constant, and not relative. So if you fire away two photons from the same source in the same direction, and piggy back on one of them, you'd see the other photon travelling at a speed relative to yours which equals c. This has made a lot of physics students get headaches, until they have learned to accept that every observable facts point to it being true.

The statement above is okay in local cases, but might vary due to gravitational influence, so the speed of light might or might not be as stated above.

Now, as the speed of light is finite, it means that pictures taken of really far away objects are also showing images of things which are younger than they are now. nowadays the hubble takes pictures which shows things that are billions of years old. Who knows, maybe they have a picture of your birth somewhere.
