Because Episcopalians don't listen to the Bible much. Ghavrel Send a noteboard - 12/05/2011 05:47:03 AM
Or, less flippantly, we don't treat it as the sole arbiter of our faith. You're familiar enough with our theology that I don't need to explain the three-legged stool here. There is a great deal in the Bible that we consciously and conscientiously reject. We also acknowledge that it was written by humans; however justified the misogynistic opinions of a first century ex-Pharisee might have been in the context of his life, they're hardly a sound basis for a church entering the 21st century.

I'm excoriating Joel because he doesn't apply the points he has made to female ordination, which he supports. The points he's raising are valid if you're a Biblical literalist; thankfully, I am not a Biblical literalist. Paul had his hangups too.
"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."
