If you look at the definition of an assault weapon almost all of it cosmetic issues like the type of grip it has and if the stock can be folded. Even things like the muzzle break are mostly meaningless in this context. They did restrict the guns to ten round clips but there are so many higher capacity clips out that this meaningless, besides the shooter in Aurora might have actually been more deadly if he had ten reliable ten round clips instead of that piece of crap 100 round drum that jammed on him.

I wouldn't oppose a law that would actually restrict people from getting the most dangerous weapons I just haven’t seen a workable law that would do that and not just be a feel good band-aid. I think it would make more sense to focus on laws that might reduce accidental shooting like mandatory gun safety laws and holding people responsible for how their guns are stored and guarded so if you leave a loaded 9mm on the kitchen table and your eight year old shots your neighbor’s kid you can be held accountable.
