You don't think it was malevolent but you thought is was xenophobic???? Sorry but that makes zero sense to me. How about this they are both from the same place and so they would be getting food from home. Everyone likes food from home but no one likes to be the food from home. That was the joke. If the joke was exactly the same except the bugs and the people both came from the France would it still be xenophobic because the punch line would still be the same?

Her political party really shouldn't be factor and its inclusion in the discussion speaks more of the political motivation of her critics then it does the meaning of the joke.
