I'm saying that having additional people in the marriage shouldn't warrant additional legal rights. To be completely clear, I don't have a problem with multiple partners in a marriage, even a legally recognised one but only two people in it get the rights of a "traditional" married couple.
Of course they can still live together and have sex with each other. But in the united states, that third wheel that gets axed out of the legal marriage would not get the same legal benefits as the other two spouses: hospital visitation rights, joint tax filings, probate considerations in the chance that you didn't leave a will or if there is some problem with the will, etc... I can't say whether the federal government would step in if it found out they considered themselves religiously married though not legally married in the US.
I'd imagine the last would be a major issue if it were the case, given the church and state obsession. It would be serious discrimination against some non-Christian religions.
