You're basically right, but they are planning for those contingencies to some extent. Aemon Send a noteboard - 25/04/2013 08:43:22 PM

They've stated that they're planning to train their astronauts in dentistry, medical technologies, etc. They'll have years of full-time training before they go, which should be enough time to get a decent grasp on the basics of many different fields. Certainly complicated procedures will be out of the question, but basic health care should be within reach. A toothache is not going to put them out of commission. Too, the company will undoubtedly select particularly healthy individuals and carefully control their diet and exercise. They'll also remove a lot of modern dangers from the equation. No sports injuries, violent crime, car crashes, pollution, disease, etc. Seems to me there's a good chance that, assuming their equipment remained functional, they'd live until advanced age caused an untreatable health condition. At which point they'd die a relatively natural death at a reasonable age, which would be acceptable to most people considering the trip.

I know. It really perplexes me that so many people are so down on it. - 24/04/2013 07:19:42 PM 830 Views

What's the problem, technically? - 24/04/2013 07:24:22 PM 800 Views
Basically? Mass and redundancy - 24/04/2013 10:40:30 PM 712 Views
The mass is what I wondered about. - 24/04/2013 11:03:36 PM 749 Views
Fuel costs are linear to mass, total costs are probably less - 25/04/2013 12:20:55 AM 704 Views
To put this in perspective, adding to Issac's points - 25/04/2013 01:50:38 AM 769 Views

I agree with your points, but you've still only listed financial (not technical) problems. - 25/04/2013 08:22:25 PM 736 Views
Finacial problems are technical problems - 25/04/2013 10:19:17 PM 729 Views

Anyone who would seriously consider that is desperate and/or depressed (or an astronaut). - 24/04/2013 03:00:54 PM 719 Views
I'm not depressed or desperate. Does that make me an astronaut? - 24/04/2013 07:11:14 PM 855 Views
