View original postI mean, you're right that to refer to a person as 'it' when 'he' or 'she' or singular 'they' would do is insulting, but not correct that it is always wrong to refer to an adult as 'it', even when the person's gender is not in question. Because 'he', 'she' or 'they' will not always do.
The first part being the important one here. There are grammatical constructions where you would use 'it' for any and all persons, yes. When I talk about referring to adults as 'it', I'm talking about choosing to do so in the large majority of cases where the grammar allows you to choose between 'he', 'she' and 'they'.
