Without necessarily disputing your (well-informed, I am sure) characterization of Trump... Cannoli Send a noteboard - 30/12/2020 11:30:02 PM

...so what? IDK why Pompeo, I know nothing about him with regard to religion, and give me Trump over Pence on the subject any day. An indifferent nominal Christian is much to be preferred to a devout evangelical apostate, from my (and Becket's) perspective.

Then at least it would've meant something and wouldn't have been a complete joke. As if anybody would believe for a second that Trump cares a jot about religious freedom, or about abortion for that matter

Stipulating that he doesn't, why does it matter? How is he worse than EVERY OTHER PRESIDENT in that regard? What people on that side of the political spectrum get is that his own feelings don't matter, his actions do. His appointees to the Supreme Court are not notably worse as a whole than the Bushes' or Reagan's and a damn sight better than Nixon. To say nothing of the Democrats. I didn't vote for him because I DIDN'T trust him on the issue, but the motivations behind actions like this don't matter so much as the fact that he does them.

I'm not sure where you get his indifference to religious freedom unless A. for you that means making absolutely sure Moslems get all the freedom they want and no one looking crosseyed at them or B. it's just a presumption born of your assessment of him as lacking any principles or interest in anything beyond his own self-indulgence. But it also means he has no interest in making churches hire people purporting to be married to same-sex concubines or pay for abortions or birth control or establish trans bathrooms on the premises.

- or that he has any clue or any interest in who Thomas Becket was.

Of course Trump knows who Becket was! I'm shocked that you would think otherwise!
There was a movie, after all.
I'd be surprised if he even managed to read the whole proclamation before signing it.

The important thing is that there is someone in his administration who could write it and convince him to.

They should just have put Pence's name underneath it. Or Pompeo's. - 30/12/2020 11:48:05 AM 185 Views
