Noem sounds plausible indeed - though she's as bad as Stefanik in terms of having made sucking up to Trump her day job, instead of the actual work she was elected to do, and I don't see her moving the needle much in the election.

One must ensure they stay on the good side of The Leader. Im waiting for Trump to die so I can see if the Republican party becomes a true European style populist party (America first, against most immigration, focus on the working class, anti-intellectual, anti globalism).

The US has gone through periods of isolationism and being anti-immigrant. Thats nothing new. I think the last time was the 1920s. There are interesting ideas that it has to do with American over-involvement in world affairs and reaching a certain threshold for immigrants as part of the US population.
