The Sith are stronger than individual Jedi, in general, for the simple reason that there can only be two Sith at a time whereas there are many Jedi (admittedly not so many anymore by the time of the original trilogy, but they could retrain and get more again).


That does not fit with the "bring balance to the force" prophecy. If that is to be correct, the balance is achieved by there being two Sith and two Jedi. If their relative strengths were that different, that prophecy would make no sense, as Anakin would (on the contrary) destroy the balance.


According to Lucas, the balance prophecy referred to Vader when he killed the Emperor. This destroyed the Sith and brought balance to the Force. It was misinterpreted by the Jedi though.
