It's just simplistic. Like a Disney movie, but no songs. What really bugs me is that the Company

It's not a particularly deep plot. It's freaking gorgeous, and that's about it.
Although, there's a throwaway line in the movie that really sums it up for me. It's when scientist lady is shrieking about how the planet is worth more than just the rocks in it. It's totally, completely true, and the fact that the Company is too stupid to realize that irritates me.
You have found a planet with 1)Sentient lifeforms 2)Flying mountains and 3)ORGANISMS WHICH NATURALLY TELEPATHICALLY COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. ANY of those three represents an unprecedented leap ahead in our understanding of science, and all the Company cares about is the rock underneath!?
Sociology, Psychology, Art, even Theology would all be radically altered by studying the Na'vi (Hey, these aliens act so similar to us in some ways. Is all sentient life similar? Do they all have a God?)
You've found massive rock formations that are lighter than air- so light that they can support entire ecosystems. INSANE. What? How?!
TELEPATHIC INTERFACE. Avatar is set not even 200 years in the future. Obviously there's been some advances in neurotechnology- that's what the Avatar program is, after all. But can the humans control their vehicles with their thoughts? Can they store memories in trees, and share them with each other? Do the humans have anything even remotely close to a semi-sentient PLANET?
Sheesh. And that's not even going to the whole "the cure for AIDS could be in the rainforest" arguments...

I don't completely agree, but this is similar to everyone retroactively hating Tom Cruise's movies.
