Just because someone may have tried to jump on the beast from above before doesn't mean that won him the following struggle. I am sure a lot of hotheads died trying.
I would have loved to see it in the movie, it certainly wasn't a walk in the ballpark, but they probably left it out for dramatic reasons and because it would have looked too much like Jake taming his own smaller dragon.
