Some questions.

1. You think that Gawyn will get his hands on Mat's medallion and use that to counter Rand's OP advantage. However is this actually required?

I mean Rand's channeling sickness has advanced to the point that grabbing hold of the power nearly knocks him out. So long as Gawyn surprises Rand even slightly, he could certaily kill Rand without needing the amulet, while Rand was still throwing up. And I don't know if Rand truly knows how utterly stupid/insane Gawyn is so he likely won't grab hold of the power before meeting him, especially if the meeting happens in a public place like Caemlyn.

I figure the sickness is caused by Rand's link with Moridin, so I doubt his return to sanity will have cured this, so unless Gawyn's attack happens after Moridin is dead, the medallion will not really be necessary for Gawyn to kill Rand since Rand will be unable to use OP to defend himself anyway.

Though it is certainly possible that Rand will have less and less control over his body and mind as time goes on, there is absolutely nothing to indicate at the moment that he'll lose the ability to channel. He had a hard time with it before Dragonmount simply because of his psychological issues around Lews Therin. Of course, the sickness doesn't make it pleasant, but it doesn't actually prevent him from using the Power.

I consider the medallion important mostly because of the Judas parallel with the thirty pieces of silver. I mean...like I said...

Judas sold his knowledge of Jesus' whereabouts, identifying him with a kiss, for a price of thirty pieces of silver, and this led to Jesus' death. After Jesus was arrested, Judas gave the silver away (by throwing it at the priests in the Temple) and then he hanged himself on a tree. Mat got the silver medallion in Aelfland. The price: he was hanged 'for knowledge' on a tree, but he was saved from death by a 'kiss' from Rand (CPR), and he will accidentally betray Rand by giving that piece of silver away, which will lead to Rand's death at Gawyn's hands.

How perfect is that?

2. Gawyn being able to kill Rand presumes that Rand is alone. I would expect that after his revelation at the end of TGH, he would go back to his allies and friends. If so Gawyn might well be able to win against Rand, but can he win against the Aiel/Aes Sedai bodyguards. Especially people who know how to get past the medallion.

It doesn't really presume he's alone. Rand might allow for a proper, honorable duel. Also, Rand need not be aware of the fact that Gawyn is wearing the medallion, so he might well be counting on the Power as a backup in case Gawyn can beat him with the sword (which seems likely, as Rand just lost a hand). And if he doesn't know, no one with him will either, and no one will have cause to fear for Rand's death.

It could also be that those who are guarding Rand are simply those who would be reluctant to kill Gawyn - Andorans. Rand might have the Maidens guarding Elayne, for example.

3. For that matter do we know for sure that Rand could not get past it? I mean he has LTT's memories at this point, and he also knows about the medallion and what it does. He has also seen Mat die by a lightning strike from Rahvin so he knows full well its weaknessess. I figure if Rand has even a little time, he will be able to realise how Gawyn is protected and take him out anyway.

Of course it is possible that Rand will be utterly surprised and won't have any time to attack Gawyn with indirect weaves, but again in this case the medallion won't be required anyway.

I really doubt that Rand will try to use the Power on Gawyn when Gawyn has nothing but a sword. Unless, of course, he sees that Gawyn is about to kill him. A really bad time to discover that Gawyn is protected.

4. Would Cadsuane&Co really let Rand stay dead? I mean presumably her knowledge of Balefire means that she knows how to weave it. Even if Gawyn does manage to kill Rand, why would Cadsuane not zap the idiot and bring Rand back? It is certainly worth the price considering how important Rand is compared to the nobody that Gawyn is.

Rand prevents that by killing Gawyn at the same time that Gawyn kills him (which is how the legend goes, you know). Once he's dead, he can't be balefired.

5. And just to throw in the possibility, if nothing else, Rand could use the True Power to kill Gawyn. The medallion being designed to counter OP would likely do nothing for that. I am unsure if the new and improved Rand would be willing to use TP again, even to save himself, but the option is there.

Like I said before, I doubt Rand would be willing to use the Power to fight Gawyn, and there is nothing to say that he will have any idea about the medallion.
