A real analyst or literary critic would laugh his ass off to see this... Cannoli Send a noteboard - 06/09/2009 06:51:57 AM
That you revere every description and have no problems with the pacing of the story is fine.
Thank you. Seriously though, it is not so much the pacing as the fact that this is a mere 1/30th or so of the book. This has nothing to do with my affection for the descriptions or anything like that. It is merely one chapter of a novel, and was not written to be a stand-alone work.
The problem is that this does not make you a better fan than those that miss the pacing of the first half of the series.
Ah, yes. Who could forget the beginnings of books 1 - 6, where the good guys revealed that they had mostly been sitting on their asses since the last book ended, and were starting to think about going somewhere, and probably should have set out a while ago. THOSE were thrilling works all right!
Nor does it mean that your opinion is somehow more valid than others. People read fantasy for different reasons. Some read for edification others for entertainment. What some people find entertaining others may find tedious.
Yes, fine. But YOU are the one complaining about it and saying it is lacking. Take your own advice - just because you do not like it, does not mean others do.
I’m a huge fan of the series and it saddens me that the last half has not fulfilled its promise. Perhaps, I’m too vocal in my criticism, but it is in part because I remember what it used to be.
Can you even articulate what that was? Things change. A series is not the same from beginning to end, and a book is not encapsulated in a microcosmic form in its first chapter.
I’m going to try to overcome my jadedness and look at the series with fresh eyes as I work on my current reread.

You obviously have a vast knowledge and understanding of books, much more than the average fan. Yet your inability to view the books with any sort of critical eye damages your credibility.
My credibility with people who don't understand it as well? According to you.
WoT is not literature. It will not be taught in English Lit classes 200 years from now. It has some flaws. Pointing them out doesn’t undo all the wonderful things about the series. Nor does it mean that the fans that point them out are “mindless.”
Nor does the inevitability of flaws existing mean that stupid criticisms are any less stupid. I was very specific in refuting your assertions, but you offer no evidence of the flaws you claim are in there, nor do you defend your original assertions, leaving me to conclude that there is not a lot of thought or reasoning behind the knee-jerk reaction to 3% of a story. I stand by "mindless" without some evidence otherwise.
