MORDENKAINEN IS AN UNSTOPPABLE JUGGERNAUT!!! Joel Send a noteboard - 04/05/2012 05:40:33 PM
I share Sidous's unease with the casual disregard he displays to something like channeler strength, the identificaiton of individual angreal etc.

I'm curious about why people find relative strengths in the One Power to be so interesting. Being a physicist of the theoretical orientation, I absolutely agree that it can be interesting to study something with little or no practical application, but I've never had that much interest in strength. I'll happily discuss other aspects of the One Power, though, such as how Traveling became a lost Talent. If anyone can shed some light on why they are interested in One Power strength, I'd be happy to read it.

That's the kind of the stuff I find absolutely facinating.

Was Darth Revan more powerful than Darth Sidious? How does Darth Bane compare to Darth Vader?

Who is the most powerful mage in the Forgotten Realms? Is it Elminster, Karsus of Netheril, Khelben Blackstaff?

How does Demandred compare to Sammael?

What is the total potential size of the North's armies vs that of the Lannisters or Dorne?

How many ships can the Manderly's support vs the city of Braavos?

How much more gold does Tywin Lannister have than House Stark?

I just find the ability to rank competitors in a hierarchical and proportionate order incredibly interesting.

Seems like most Greyhawk wizards could mop the floor with Frealms denizens, but he would be particularly hard to beat since his player literally wrote 90% of the grimoire (along with all the other rules.) If nothing else, he could chunk Mordys Dis around until Elminster were no more than an anemic fighter with an AC that looked like first level THAC0 (and vice versa.)

Of course, since Greyhawk and Faerun are separate worlds, Mordenkainen can never confront Elminster, which is the biggest problem with "who would win a fight between..." debates: The very premise is usually so implausible, if not impossible, as to moot the discussion; it does not matter who would win a fight that can never be. Worse, the nature of the hypothetical battle between fictional foes precludes resolution of both battle and debate. Elminster throwing down with Khelben is even less likely than Egwene and Elayne flinging balefire at each other, or Mat and Rand dueling to the death. Rand COULD conceivably end up in mortal combat with Gawyn, and if Egwene (or Elayne, for that matter) is turned by a circle via Myrddraal, that could also happen, but even those are of dubious likelihood because of how they would impact the narrative. Any competition divorced from the narrative is divorced from relevance, making the whole thought-experiment diverting (or diversion,) but pointless.
