Because no one with even a shred of objectiveness in them, could discount what the Inn Keepers Daughter accomplished in this book.

Egwene took the fractured, corrupted mess that was the Aes Sedai before she arrived. She clensed the Black Ajah, and for the most part pulled all the various factions together.

Egwene took a group of channelers that before she arrived, was at best useless, and at worst a knife in Rand's back.

Egwene now has a group that can be a powerful weapon for Rand. She now has the Aes Sedai moving forward towards Tarmon Gai'don.


It's fine to hate a character, but to not acknowledge a clear accomplishment on several levels is appalling. I hate Elayne, but I didn't struggle to see the merit in her acquisition of the Sun Throne.
When was that, BTW? The only throne I know of her having is the Lion Throne. There is also the fact that she had the right to it under law, and gained it in the lawful manner. She did not rebel against the lawful (however incompetnat or obnoxious) ruler, divide the nation and re-arrange every situation in her mind to redound to her credit, or blackmail the people she was supposed to be protecting into following her commands. She is also careful to stick within established rule and law, but willing to make expedient changes to deal with the threats of the day. Egwene adheres to things because the Tower has always done them that way, but tramples over accepted rules and standards to suit her purposes and advance her cause.


The Amyrlin Seat is the ruler of Tar Valon, which is an established nation with lands and claims. Egwene's battle is the same as Elayne's contest with her fellow nobles for the leadership. As an Aes Sedai, Egwene has the right to fight for the Amyrlin Seat.

Egwene is as legitimate as Elaida. Elaida was raised by Sitters, some of whom were from the Black Ajah. This makes the vote invalid and illegal. Egwene is also not a rebel - she was an Accepted in the Waste before being summoned by the Hall of the Tower in Salidar. You can even say that she is not a rebel because she is a registered Novice in the White Tower at the moment.

Egwene has the right to the Amyrlin Seat as much as Elayne has the right to the Lion Throne (not Sun Throne). All Aes Sedai have that right, they merely need to go through the steps and once the Hall raises them, they are legitimate. Egwene was raised without the consent of the Red Ajah which makes her an illegal Amyrlin, and Elaida was raised without the Blue and with the presence of the Black. Either Amyrlin is acceptable and thus the contest was inevitable.
