My immediate thoughts always took me to Graendal since she was already involved with the Caemlyn Palace and later in the series we see her loot Sammael's palace... and Asmo's reaction and instant death speak of a Channeler to me ... but the evidence is thin for any of the suspects IMO.
"The careful reader" is easy enough to say several books after it's been pointed out that he is specifically an assassin... up until then the clues we're given just point that he's a high-level DF who is tasked with killing Fain. Certainly in hind-sight it seems obvious.

I think it was definitely clear since TSR that Slayer must be more than a high-level DF, especially considering his powers, Birgitte saying his evil is ancient and the stanza about him in the Dark Prophecy calling Isam and Luc the Shadow's hounds ("Luc came to the Mountains of Dhoom. Isam waited in the high passes. The hunt is now begun. The Shadow's hounds now course, and kill. One did live, and one did die, but both are. The Time of Change has come." ). The clues are there.
On the other hand, Graendal had less screen time and was much less mentioned before LoC than Isam & Luc (or Slayer).
Anyway, we will see, this thread was after all actually about Fain's Myrddraal.
