If Graendal warded her grounds I find this option plausible. However, from what I've read about her with her interactions with Sammael, Cyndane, Moghedien and in the Prologue of TGS, her palace isn't warded. This is why I think she was caught by surprise.
If Graendal had Aran'gar with her, which is, you must admit, highly possible, then she/he would have known when Rand channeled, and also detected the insane amounts of the Power Rand started holding before he let go the Balefire.
Even if they were close allies, Aran'gar wouldn't be there all the time. Sammael and Graendal were closely tied but he used to visit her once every few days or even every few weeks. The chances that Aran'gar would be in the palace in that hour would be rather small.
